2021.10.20 23:26 Engram87 Whirlpools in the Pattern 1: predictions/thoughts for the show and it's success
I'm writing this fully aware the show can tank. Make me inexplicably sad that a good adaptation of WoT has now been pushed back a generation, at best.
But there's a month left for that to become real, in the meantime, I'm going to try and be optimistic. I've definitely seen and read enough to believe there's potential. Potential for the show to do a good job with the core cast of characters, and their biggest experiences, from the books.
Where the story feels like it is genuinely asking: what would another turning look like if things happened this way, instead.
See, at the core, it is a fact that the Pattern doesn't look the same when an Age comes back up again. Things are broadly similar, but lots of details are different.
What holds a lot of these different Ages together is the characters. I think two very similar Ages are ones where the same people, with mostly the same views, come together and save the world. Exactly like Heroes of the Horn, who are born in different Ages and different periods of history with different levels of tech, or culture, but some things about them are the same, always.
So in a different Age, perhaps Egwene is a Healer of extraordinary Talent, and Nynaeve is a Wisdom who uses Dreamwalking to help her village. The external things, like looks, strength, Talents. . They matter less. The innermost things that make them themselves... That's what matters.
And if the show can sell me on the idea that the events on screen are one such Turning of the Wheel, where however they look, or whatever they wear or use to fight, the characters behave more or less like these book characters I've enjoyed reading about, and watching grow...I'll be happy.
I honestly give the show a LOT of leeway to change things. That's fine..make me an internally consistent tale that still preserves the struggles and emotional growth of the main characters, and you're golden.
Make me a story that takes some of RJs political ideas, the things he liked to play with, and makes them relevant to our world, just as the books were to the 90s, in some ways. If the story gets people thinking, they'll be more loyal to it.
That's exactly why I'm here, 20 years after starting WoT. I'm engaged by the many cool possibilities of the world RJ created, and still identify with some of the characters he wrote, but I liked that he was asking interesting questions with his stories.
Not always very well. As I've grown, I see that now. But RJ really embodied something wonderful about speculative fiction: speculation. Asking big what ifs. What if Original Sin had been committed by men? What if only women could safely wield ultimate power? What if a peaceful people were forced into violence, then told their history?
The books had those, and more questions. Was the answer always satisfactory? No. But it's nice to see the questions being posed, at least.
I want the show to do that, again. I want the show to embrace it's difference from the books, and allow the readers to theorize again like we did with the books:
Hey so it looks like Moiraine takes Cadsuane's rumoured role in Logain's capture, in the show. I wonder if this means we don't get Cadsuane at all?
I want to experience that community of inquisitive minds parsing every scene, every word, looking for clues. We all know a lot more of what's to come, thanks to the books. But the show inevitably cannot hit all those big plot moments. So it will have to create other plot moments to connect the stuff they can keep.
It's like a lot of the puzzle pieces are missing, but you have to put what's left together to still give a coherent picture that, if you squint at, kind of looks like the book stories.
And I think they have it in them to do this much. Give me a remixed story, fine. But show me you gave thought to the plot. That you tried to set up future events, and didn't just change things willy nilly. You had all 14 books before you started writing, so you should be able to condense them in clever ways, interesting ways, in ways that make people go "wow, that's one heck of a way to get them from point A to B quicker than the books, while keeping the soul of the plot arc".
That is, adapt. Adapt well. Have vision. Be internally consistent. Pick up themes from the book you want to showcase, and stick to it, so there's a thematic arc, like in the books. Don't drop themes half way through because you ran out of material.
Do that and you'll still get emotional gut punches as our main guys go through the big crazy moments from the books. Help me see and feel, Dumai's Wells. Dazzle me with the Cleansing. Make my heart skip as I watch Egwene defend the White Tower, and Perrin rally the Two Rivers, and Rand weep over the past of the Aiel.
And if, to get there, you need to change the rest of the wiring, the connecting parts.. do it. Do it with gusto. With style and confidence.
I realize that, after all, I want this show to succeed. I want the best of what I loved about WoT to be on screen. I'm afraid, but also excited. It truly is time to toss the dice. I hope we get more than the Dark One's Eyes when they land!f

2021.10.20 23:26 xyntax0408 Perfumes never last on me .. help?
Funny I'm asking this question after many years of using perfumes. I spent a good amount of years in Europe in my youth and had some trips to towns like Grasse in the South of France where some well known perfume factories are located. Despite spraying on concentrated strong perfumes, I realized that none of the scents lasted well on me. I tried to improve the longevity of the scent by using lotion prior and targeting the back of my ears, neck, hair, wrists but the scent would go away within an hour it's been so mind boggling to me. I do not have any body odor to begin with and initially thought it was my personal perception of not being able to smell the perfume after spraying it on but that has been confirmed by my bf as well. Once we tried on the same perfume (MyBurberry) and it lasted on him ! and both of us couldn't smell it on me. Is it just me? Any tips or advice will be very much appreciated because like every girl I do want to smell good...

2021.10.20 23:26 meeshi-ma I read a sci fi book, probably between 1990 and 1995. The protagonist was a drifter/con man that had a special gun that somehow hooked into his nervous system that made his reactions speed up.
He was made to check out a derelict space station which turned out to be still inhabited but the aliens moved super fast and he could only see them with his special gun. Any ideas? It ended as if it was part of a series but I only saw the first one

2021.10.20 23:26 Moviecartographer Frankenstein (1931)
IMDb / Wikipedia?wprov=sfti1) / 500moviesorbust
The only problem with writing about such a well known movie is - what to write? What hasn’t been said? I like to think I’ve got a different way at looking at life but, come on now - it’s frickin’ Frankenstein - frickin’ Boris Karloff - frickin’ Colin ‘It’s Alive’ Clive. It’s 90 years old and I still prefer it to modern remakes.
On the off case you don’t know this classic monster story, an obsessed scientist, Henry Frankenstein, and his faithful hunchback servant/lab assistant stitch together body parts of various “dearly departed” and uses the wonder of the day - electricity! - to bring the monster to life. Small hiccup, the hunchback retrieves the wrong brain - instead of a normal healthy brain, they’ve installed the corrupted brain of a convict. While things initially seem to be ok, a reaction to a flaming torch (fire bad!) is misconstrued as an act of aggression. The hunchback further messes with the monster after he’s locked in the dungeon (what a jerk move, right? Maybe he was jealous of the attention the monster was getting) and long story short… several unfortunate events down the road it’s all “grab your torch and pitchfork!” and we’re left with a burnt up windmill and a re-dead monster… or are we?!? I’ll never tell :]
I obviously find the movie a kick and noticed its director, James Whale, has several iconic films under his belt - Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). I’ll tell you true, I’ve had many of these films for decades but I haven’t paid as close or careful attention as I have films from modern decades. I recently upgraded the 8 movie DVD set to the 30 film Universal Classic Monsters Collection and have been busy inputting the set into my Movie Collection Catalog. Maybe its because I’m digging into the particulars of all these horror films one after the other but I didn’t realize how many of them share director, writers, producers, and actors. It’s proving to be an interesting learning curve, now I’m getting excited to dig in and give these films the closer watch they deserve.

2021.10.20 23:26 Shadow1270 What are the ghosts from Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic 3 and Knuckles?
Sonic 3 and Knuckles have ghosts in Sandopolis Act 2 and also there are ghosts that appear in Sonic Adventure 2. I have never played Sonic Adventure 2, but I have played S3K. Are the ghosts affiliated with Eggman or are they Eggman robots?

2021.10.20 23:26 disArray77 How to date someone with intimacy issues?
We’re both around 25 in age.
I just met this girl who I’m completely infatuated with right now.
Our first date went great! We kept it lo-key and met up at a casual restaurant. We felt an instant connection; the conversation flowed naturally and silence was comfortable, we didn’t even need any small talk. Drove her home. Completely platonic.
Since both of us clearly have a connection, we decided to plan a second date. This time, more romantic. I picked her up, gave her flowers, and opened and closed the car door for her. As usual, a great time at dinner; getting to know each other more and more. When I walk her to her front door, I ask if I can kiss her. She says yes. It wasn’t the best kiss in the world but it was decent. I was smiling for the next two days.
She’s pretty bad at texting and takes hours, sometimes days to reply; so I feel a bit disconnected when I’m not with her. So I take the initiative and try to ask her to hangout. Because she’s an avid hiker, we planned to go hiking during the weekend.
As usual, our interaction was completely natural. We were jammin’ out to our similar music on the 2 hour drive there. I held her hand as we crossed streams, hiked in comfortable silence, and talked about deep issues. Then during our break, I really wanted to kiss her, so I asked. She stops me and says she wants to take it slow. Naturally, I ask her why.
In so many words, she told me that she has intimacy problems that make her a difficult person to date. They stem from a lack of affection from both divorced parents (Dad’s a Narcissist, Mom has had a streak of abusive boyfriends). She gives me an easy out but says she’s willing to work on her issues… it just may need some time. There’s no way I’m giving up that easy and I told her so.
Over text I asked her if she was still seeing other people on the dating app. She said she doesn’t spend much time on there anymore, but wouldn’t be offended if I did. I told her that if she’s willing to put in the work, then I am too. I told her we can go at her pace, however slow; as long as we are still moving towards the same goal of developing a romantic relationship. No reply.
That’s the synopsis of our interactions so far.
I’m the complete opposite and thrive on intimacy. It feels like an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. It can get frustrating sometimes, but my gut is telling me to see this thing through; however it turns out.
So, any tips on how to go about developing intimacy between us while going slow? I don’t want to get ‘friendzoned’, but don’t want to push her either.
